One side of each card gives the place a certain person went to, and the other side shows how they traveled. Now your task: indicate only those cards that you need to turn over to see if any of this information violates what you were told about people going to Boston always taking the subway.
From a logical point of view, the answer is the first and last card. You need to check the first card, because this person went to Boston, and so the other side had better say "Subway." You also need to check the last card, as this person traveled by cab, and so the other side of the card had better not say "Boston." If you struggled to get the right answer, don't worry too much—in most experiments with this kind of thing, only about 25 percent of people get the right answer. But now for the interesting part. Let's do the test over, leaving the logic of the situation entirely unchanged, but altering the content of the information. Now suppose you are told that the children in some school are allowed cookies in the afternoon, but only if they've helped clean the playroom. Each card will now give information, for a certain child, about whether they helped clean, on one side, and about whether they ate cookies on the other. So now we have:
